I've Known SUNBEARS a long time.......

Years ago when I lived in St. Augustine Fl. I was trying to get on my feet as a recording dude. I didn't really know what I was doing or what was going on outside of my little bubble. I had been on tour with my band Moments In Grace for too long, and I was tired of being away.  So I started concentrating on getting better at the recording stuff. I had always been into it, But I knew at this point I had to start putting myself out there to work with people. I don't know if I was really in a position to do that technically but I felt it was important to get something going.  So I had a digi 002 and and some pres and some weird mics and I went for it.  I had met a guy named Ryan who was in a band with some dudes from the Area. They were called "Bernard". I remember my friend Ryan Dettra who owned cafe 11 ( I use to cook there) asked me If I had heard Ryan's Band. Ryan also cooked with us at the cafe. I had not so one night I was running sound for Cafe11 and Bernard Played. They were amazing. They seemmed to have an edge on the performance side of their show. Most small bands jump up there and just play, which is great too, But for a Local band I felt this was cooler than most. Ryan had told me that Jonathan their singer did most of the recording but couldn't really grasp drums at the time. He knows what he is doing now. So one day they came to my house in Lincolnville in downtown St. Augustine and we slammed out the drums for one of the songs. It was a great day. That started a string of years we would work together. Next up I recorded the Bernard Record for Floodgate records. I didn't mix it. Which is weird? After that Bernard was over...... Ryan went on to grad school and Jonathan and Jared Created Sunbears!  Sunbears was different, it was fun and sort of happy. It had satire and confidence that Bernard didn't have. Sunbears came up to atlanta and we once again recorded the drums only for Dream Happy Dreams. Jonathan had all the other instruments covered.  We recorded these drums at the old Glow In The Dark Studios In little Five Points Atlanta. It was great. This time I mixed the record and I'm so glad they had me on board for that album. It still stands as one of my favorites I've been a part of. After that I had relocated to NYC, and had a great studio in the SOHO area of Manhattan. It was awesome and insane.  I got a call from Jonathan saying they were ready to make a new record, but this time they wanted me to produce and engineer. I thought.......damn. Ok. YOU SURE? He said, I just want your flavor on everything. I was honored and agreed to make this record. They came up in March of that year and yes it was still winter. We knocked out "You Will Live Forever" in 4 weeks. It took me another 2-3 weeks to mix it. We did a lot of fun stuff. Jonathan is somewhat of a genius with instrumentation and  master programmer. I didn't want anything to sound or feel programmed so I made him play it all. And of course Jared destroyed it. One of the best rock/everything genre drummers I have recorded. It came out better and cooler than I could have hoped and it was hard and it was fun. But it was mostly worth it. People were taken back by this record it was a lot less bubbly and a lot more melancholy. Which is totally my jam. If you know me I pretty much only listen to depression in audio form.   It was fun to see them tour on that record and get the credit where their credit was due.  I had hoped to produce the next record, but Jonathan had other plans. He had added two new guys. One of those guys is Walter Hill. Walt use to be in a band called Shangrala and they were great. Walt and Jonathan joined forces on a studio.  Its called Twin Hill Studios and its a great place to make magic. Jonathan got into mastering and vinyl production and cutting. Those guys are doing great stuff. But all that to say. They were gonna track it and I would get the pleasure of mixing it. I was stoked to not be shut out of the SUNBEARS camp.  They are always pushing new ground and killing it live. Creatively and technically one of the best groups I have ever been around. I always joke that Jonathan has 9 brains, but sometimes I really believe it. He is amazing at everything. Except for recording drums of course. JKJKJKJKJKJKJK.  Go check out SUNBEARS! its just so legit and its ambitious, fun, and creative. Journey continues......
